John Boettcher was born and raised in Mellen, Wisconsin and has lived in the Northwoods all his life.
Having spent much time in the woods all his life he has observed wildlife in natural surroundings on a daily basis. He draws on this first hand experience to bring to his paintings the lure of the North that is so appealing to those who love the great outdoors. John's art work reflects the deep attachment he has to the wilderness areas and the wildlife native to northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and Upper Michigan. The settings for his wildlife paintings and drawings are actual places and are given as much attention as the animals shown.
His favorite mediums are oils, watercolors and scratchboard but any medium that seems to suit the subject at hand may be used...including acrylics, pencil, ink or wood for carving. A few years ago he was asked to privide 24 full page scratchboard illustrations for a book published by Willow Creek Press called "Legendary Northwoods Animals". This book can be seen in most libraries.
John's prints are very beautiful, done on high quality watercolor paper with a very long life expectancy. |

My wife and I have a great love of the outdoors and spend all of our recreation time outside. The majority of that time is in the woods; either mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, snow shoeing or skiing. During the summer of 2003 we climbed several 14ers in Colorado's Sawatch mountain range, taking with us a fresh disposable camera daily. At the end of that trip my wife said to me, "I can see you taking up photography in your retirement."
And so it began. I'm not yet retired but I've jumped full force into digital photography and there's no looking back Most of the images are taken from around our home in the north woods of Wisconsin or on many of the wonderful hiking trails within a short drive of our home. |
